Do you hate death as much as I do? That’s probably a stupid question. Of course you do. It stings like nothing else.
I just wanted you to know that the Lord doesn’t like death any more than we do. The reason I know this is because the Bible tells us that death is an enemy: an enemy of us, and an enemy of God.
It will be the last enemy to be done away with (1 Corinthians 15:26). I can’t help but wish it had been the first.
We don’t understand all the whys about death. We only know that it hurts us when someone we love (or even a pet we love) dies. One day we will understand it all. The Apostle Paul said that one day we will know fully, even as we have been fully known (1 Corinthians 13:12).
Until that day, I want to give you a two-part picture to hold on to. The first part is found in Revelation chapter 20:
Then death and Hades (the grave) were thrown into the lake of fire. (Rev. 20:14a, NASB)
Our Heavenly Father will do away with His enemy, your enemy, and my enemy forever. In fact, even now this enemy is being put under Jesus’ feet (read what is around 1 Corinthians 15:26 and you’ll see). When Jesus rose from the dead, He pronounced death’s defeat. Now we don’t have to be afraid of it anymore.
This brings us to part two of the picture:
“…and He [God] will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4, NASB)
Do you hear that? There will be no more death.
My friend, these are not just pretty words to comfort someone at a funeral. These are the true words of the Living God, and they are for you right now. What He has written will happen, and you can count on it, because you can count on Him.
The only way to experience this beauty (to have a glimpse of it now, and to have it fully later) is to believe in your heart that Jesus is The Savior. Not a savior, not a prophet, not a good teacher. The Savior. Your Savior.
Cling to Him and you will see the glimpse you need right now to carry you through your grief. Cling to Him daily, and hold to the truth that one day you will be in a place without death – forever and ever.
One day, you will again see those who have gone on before you, and you’ll never be separated by death again.
One day… One very great day! All because Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. There is no other way to the Father except through the Son, dear friend.
Jesus: the Son who loved us, who took our punishment, and has removed the sting of death.
